An Inside look with Katherine Debona-The Girl in the Shadows

An inside look with Katherine Debona The Girl In The Shadows What’s is your latest book about?

It’s a story about how even the closest of friends conceal the truth from one another for their own personal gain. About how one moment, one decision, can turn your world inside out, and that there is nothing more powerful or dangerous than unrequited love. What inspired you to write your book?

Two summers ago I enrolled on a four week online crime writing course run by the Professional Writing Academy. One of the assignments was to describe a character having their breakfast – what they ate, where they sat, what they were wearing. Veronique appeared on the page, sitting in her favourite café in Paris, and the rest of the story evolved from there. What genre do you consider your book? “The Girl in the Shadows” is a crime novel, but not in the traditional sense. There’s definitely a sprinkling of suspense in there along with familial tensions that would appeal to readers of women’s fiction. How did you come up with the title?

This was all down to my editor at HQ, Victoria. She saw right to the heart of the story and the title perfectly encapsulates everything that Veronique, Alice and Mathilde are dealing with on their respective journeys. What books/authors have influenced your writing?

“On Writing” by Stephen King. This is an autobiographical account of his own career with some really honest, fantastic advice for writers. “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by Stieg Larsson. Veronique is definitely influenced by Lisbeth, more for being such a strong, female who isn’t afraid to break the rules than anything else. What are you working on at the minute?

I have very recently finished a domestic noir novel set in the UK and am also in the process of plotting and researching for two new books. One is the sequel to “The Girl in the Shadows” and the other is another domestic noir, but with a satirical edge. Purchase The Girl in the Shadows here: Amazon
