Nothing is Predictable
“the fire only hurts where it burns.”
Zara, daughter to an violent, alcoholic father and disciplinary mother. Her memories of her childhood were instilled with fear as it was filled with abuse, rape, and discomfort beyond compare.
But in 1981, after the death of her abusive father, Zara and her mother fled from Lebanon to America for the last time. Struggling to fit in anywhere she went, she was labelled as the girl from overseas as she traveled back and forth between her culture and stability-Lebanon and America.
As she grew older, her love for singing grew and so did her career. She fell in and out of love but of course there was always that one guy who stayed on her mind.
Zara finds love in many different ways but she will always find it in the same place it was in the beginning, herself.
I followed the memoir of Zara and I instantly was captivated by her honest words of redemption. Not for herself but for the life she wanted to regain for others. I felt calm as I watched Zara grow before my eyes, as if she was a close friend.
The book was fast paced and kept me reading. I followed the life of a courageous woman who experienced so much trauma and cultural concerns as her life is flipped upside down as the book illustrates Zara's childhood up to her mid-thirties.
None the less, Zara demonstrates the beautiful force of using experiences and making decisions out of them. She crosses many paths and comes up with a lot of broken smiles but her integrity is beautiful to watch.
I fell in love with Mae's writing and how the story reached into my heart. I loved how Zara found different ways to cope with her stress as in many books, a character will try one and –bang-cured. That’s not how it works. I was taken by how realistic her writing was and it gave me chills to read through some parts. Her past gave me perspective and it related well to the overall story.
I was sent this book by the author Adalina Mae and I could not be more thrilled with how the story played out. I would absolutely recommend buying this book!
